Ledger™, the global leader in digital asset security for consumers and enterprises, today announces the launch of Ledger Recovery Key, a spare key for accessing your digital assets. With a Secure Element at its core, the same technology that has powered Ledger’s uncompromising security for more than a decade, Ledger Recovery Key simplifies wallet recovery, making self-custody even more accessible. Ledger Recovery Key is now included in the box with all Ledger Flex™ and Ledger Stax™ orders, and is also sold separately. For a limited time after launch, all customers who have previously purchased a Ledger Flex or Ledger Stax can request a free Ledger Recovery Key (shipping costs apply).
Following a strong bull run, crypto adoption is growing again, with total market capitalization increasing by more than $1 trillion over the past year. In 2024, Ledger launched its next-generation secure touchscreen devices, Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex, redefining the signer user experience. They have contributed to a new sales milestone of more than 7.5 million Ledger devices sold worldwide.
With the world’s first secure touchscreens and their beautiful E Ink displays, Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex make transaction verification and secure interaction with decentralized applications crystal clear. But in a changing world, where traditional backup methods are becoming less and less practical, users also need modern options to maintain access to their wallets while preserving self-custody.
Ledger Recovery Key makes regaining access to your digital assets as easy as tapping a card and entering a PIN. Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax users can now create a secure spare key alongside their 24 words, and a Ledger Recovery Key is included in the box with every new Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex order. It connects directly to your Ledger via secure NFC wireless channels, with no intermediaries. In a matter of minutes, you can create an always-offline spare key for your digital assets, protected by your own PIN code, on secure and durable hardware.
“Ledger not only offers the best in security, but also the best and most complete set of recovery options,” says Ian Rogers, Chief Experience Officer at Ledger. “With Ledger Recovery Key, we are making secure self-custody easy to use for everyone. Too many people take risks by keeping their assets on exchanges and insecure software wallets. With Ledger Recover and now Ledger Recovery Key, in addition to the traditional 24 words, we are proud to offer a recovery solution for every type of user.”
Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex ship with a single Ledger Recovery Key for easy backup and recovery, but additional cards can be purchased separately to create multiple spare keys. There is no limit to the number of spare keys that can be created. Creating a spare key is always optional and can only be done by you with confirmation on your Ledger.
Ledger Recovery Key joins the growing set of recovery options designed to provide peace of mind to all types of users. These features remain optional, as the 24 words and interoperability remain at the core of wallet recovery functionality. However, an ever-growing user base, with different needs, backgrounds and circumstances, requires options. That is why we have added Ledger Recovery Key and, previously, Ledger Recover, powered by Coincover.
Ledger launched Ledger Recover in 2023 for those who wanted peace of mind in addition to their traditional written backup. Ledger Recover is an optional paid service that allows users to create encrypted fragments of their recovery phrase, which are protected and retrieved from secure HSMs in different jurisdictions. Users can regain access to their wallet by verifying their identity in the Ledger Live app. Since its launch, adoption of Ledger Recover has been strong, demonstrating clear demand for more recovery options.
“We are delighted to launch Ledger Recovery Key with reviewable code and a white paper, as part of our commitment to transparency,” says Charles Guillemet, Chief Technology Officer at Ledger. “It has undergone extensive internal security testing by Donjon, our world-leading team of white-hat hackers, as well as thorough internal testing and external security audits. We have received very positive feedback from security researchers and industry leaders, and we can’t wait for you to finally get your hands on it!”
The physical Recovery Key and the managed Ledger Recover service are complementary: you can use either one, both, or just your 24 words, depending on how you use your Ledger and what gives you the most peace of mind.
Ledger Recovery Key ships starting today with all new Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex orders, and additional cards can be purchased separately at Ledger.com for $39.99. For a limited time after launch, all customers who have previously purchased a Ledger Flex or Ledger Stax can request a free Ledger Recovery Key (shipping costs apply).
