Presented by Fernando Molina on the Territorio Blockchain channel.
January 8, 2027 marks a new key date for cryptocurrency users in the European Union. In this video, Fernando Molina, from Territorio Blockchain, reviews the changes arriving with the application of MiCA and, in particular, what will happen to USDT, the world’s largest stablecoin, on exchanges with a European license.
Why January 8 is a significant date
As Molina explains, from that date exchanges licensed in Europe will stop providing services with stablecoins that do not comply with the MiCA regulation. Among them is USDT, issued by Tether, which does not meet the requirements of the European framework despite being the one with the highest volume in the global market.
The video organizes the analysis into four blocks: the requirement for platforms to hold a MiCA license as crypto-asset service providers (CASPs), the exit of USDT from European exchanges, the specific situation of Binance in Europe and what is coming in 2027.
CASP licenses: how many have been left out
One of the central points is the licensing process. Molina notes that only one in five applicants obtained authorization and devotes a section to what happened in Spain, referring to the CNMV register and the ESMA MiCA register as tools for any user to check whether their platform is authorized.
Is holding USDT illegal?
The video expressly clarifies that holding USDT is not illegal: what changes is the service that regulated platforms in the EU can provide. It also addresses the role of USDC as a stablecoin deemed “significant” and reviews the decision adopted by ESMA on October 8.
What to do depending on your profile
In the final part, Molina sets out differentiated practical recommendations: for those who keep their cryptocurrencies in an app, for those who work in finance or blockchain, and for those who only hold Bitcoin, an asset that, he stresses, “is not affected” by this change. He also includes a warning about possible scams exploiting the regulatory confusion and a tax note on Form 721, as well as his own assessment of MiCA and what comes next: more powers for ESMA and changes in DeFi, staking and stablecoins.
